Individual psychological therapy provides a confidential space to understand your experiences, work through challenges, and develop practical strategies for lasting change. The process involves a logical, systematic analysis of the particular details of an individual’s situation in order to understand and facilitate the most effective resolution of the situation. Because each person is unique, and every person’s situation and difficulties vary, individual psychological therapy ensures that each case is given an individualised understanding in order to best facilitate effective and long-lasting therapeutic change. Through individual psychological therapy, this change is focused at the very core of each person’s psychological or emotional discomfort or unhappiness. Serenity Psychology uses evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including individual psychological therapy. Even though individual psychological therapy is typically a one-on-one process, you are more than welcome to have a support person with you if you like.
Individual Psychological Therapy
Couples Therapy
Couples therapy is a supportive, evidence-based process that helps partners reconnect, improve communication, and work through relationship challenges. Sessions begin with an individual appointment for each partner, before moving into joint sessions focused on building more effective ways of relating, helping your relationship grow and reconnect over time.
Group Therapy
Group therapy is a powerful and effective therapy that can be utilised in addressing a number of interpersonal and emotional difficulties. The therapy can function as a very effective tool in building cohesive closeness between members, in the case of team building, or it can intensify the gain and therapeutic aid in many situations, including those where individuals share common characteristics, such as cancer sufferers or victims of crime, or individuals with anxiety or depression, to name a few. In appropriate situations, group therapy can be a very effective method of addressing a wide variety of difficulties and issues.
ADHD Therapy and Assessment
Our ADHD assessments are comprehensive and grounded in clinical best practice, combining a clinical interview, a structured diagnostic interview, psychometric testing, and questionnaires from both you and others who know you well. Where possible, childhood school reports are also reviewed, to get a full comprehensive clinical picture. A key point of difference at Serenity Psychology is that we work alongside a GP practice, so where medication may be appropriate, clients can be guided towards a medical treatment pathway alongside psychological support.
Beyond assessment and diagnosis, we also offer ongoing ADHD therapy. This focuses on understanding how your brain works, identifying the specific challenges you experience, and developing practical strategies that help you engage with the world in ways that support ADHD functioning, including mapping and strengthening executive functions such as planning, organisation and follow-through. While medication is often recommended as part of ADHD treatment, therapy is not dependent on medication and can support you whether you're taking medication, considering it, or have chosen not to.
ACC Assessment and Treatment
Individuals in New Zealand who have experienced psychological effects as a result of an injury may be eligible for funded treatment services through ACC. Please contact us for more information. Kindly note we do not currently offer sensitive claims services.
Clinical Hypnosis (sometimes referred to as hypnotherapy) is a highly effective therapeutic technique that can be used to help in almost all challenges. Commonly, clinical hypnosis is used to assist in challenges such as quitting smoking, losing weight, assertiveness training, memory development, focus, stress management, anxiety, depression, and much more. Clinical hypnosis is a technique that allows us to utilise the full potential of our mind, and as such, the application of the technique by a skilled practitioner is almost limitless.
Online Therapy
In certain instances, face-to-face contact is not feasible or possible. To cater for this need, Serenity Psychology offers online therapy for both individuals and couples. This can be particularly helpful when attending in person is not possible, and provides an effective way to support and address psychological difficulties.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy
EMDR is a therapeutic technique that involves the intentional movement of the eyes while traumatic memories are being processed. EMDR is a scientifically verified treatment for psychological trauma and is recognised as an effective treatment for psychological trauma by the World Health Organization. Where indicated, it is a powerful and effective method for helping people process traumatic experiences.
Sex Therapy
Sex therapy provides a safe, non-judgemental space to work through challenges related to sex and intimacy. These may include difficulties with arousal, barriers to a fulfilling sexual experience, or navigating unique aspects of sexual functioning. Sex therapy is grounded in understanding the behaviour of sex and how it interacts with broader psychological wellbeing, and may be conducted individually or as a couple, depending on your situation.
